These Sweet Potato Appetizers are a healthier nibble for fall, and sweet potato fans will go crazy over these! Of course sweet potatoes do have some carbs, but even low-carb eaters could enjoy a couple of these for a treat!
PIN Sweet Potato Appetizers with Feta to try them later!
For anyone who thinks it’s hard to find a holiday appetizer that’s relatively healthy, I promise that these Sweet Potato Appetizers with Feta are going to be a hit with anyone who likes sweet potatoes. I love this combination of flavors, and if I went to a holiday gathering and found a table loaded with sweets and chips staring me in the face, I’d be excited to find a healthier option like this to eat instead. True, sweet potatoes do have some carbs, but you could eat several of these slices from a thin sweet potato without going to much overboard on carbs.
The hardest part of making these tasty appetizers with sweet potato might be finding the long narrow shaped sweet potatoes, but you can make them into two-bite nibbles if needed! And if you want a fun alternative to sugary sweet potatoes for Thanksgiving, I think this would be a great alternative.
What ingredients do you need for this recipe?
- long thin orange-flesh sweet potatoes
- Olive Oil (affiliate link)
- Italian Herb Seasoning (affiliate link), or use any all-purpose seasoning blend that you like
- Feta cheese
- Greek yogurt or sour cream
- Greek Seasoning (affiliate link)
- green onion
Are they yams or sweet potatoes?
Even though they are often mistakenly called yams in U.S. grocery stores, the vegetables used to make this dish are orange-fleshed sweet potatoes! But your store may call them yams or sweet yams.

How to Make Sweet Potato Appetizers with Feta:
(This is just a summary; scroll down for complete printable recipe.)
- Choose long, thin sweet potatoes and peel completely.
- Cut sweet potatoes into 1/2 inch rounds.
- Then use the small end of a Melon Baller (affiliate link) or something similar to scoop out a well in each piece.
- Spray a baking sheet with olive oil. I used my Misto Olive Oil Sprayer (affiliate link) but you can also brush on the oil.
- Place the sweet potatoes on the baking sheet, spray them with olive oil and sprinkle with a tiny bit of Italian Herb Seasoning (affiliate link).
- Bake until sweet potatoes are cooked through and starting to get a little color on the edges.
- While the sweet potatoes bake, mash the feta with a fork and then mix in the Greek Yogurt or sour cream, Greek Seasoning, and sliced green onion.
- Bake sweet potatoes about 25 minutes, or until they’re as soft as you like them.
- Then fill each sweet potato with a little scoop of the feta mixture and bake about 5 minutes more.
- Serve hot and wait for people to rave about them!

Ingredients
- 3 long thin orange-flesh sweet potatoes, about 1.5 pounds (see notes)
- 2 T olive oil, to brush or spray sweet potatoes and baking sheet
- 2 tsp. Italian Herb Blend (or use any all-purpose seasoning blend that you like)
- 4 oz Feta cheese, crumbled
- 3 T Greek yogurt or sour cream
- 1/2 tsp. Greek Seasoning
- 1/4 cup thinly sliced green onion
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 450F/220C.
- Choose long thin sweet potatoes if possible. Peel sweet potatoes and cut off the ends; then cut each sweet potato into 1/2 inch thick slices.
- Using the small side of a Melon Baller (affiliate link) scoop out a well in the center of each sweet potato slice. (Next time I might microwave them for a minute or two to make this easier.)
- Spray or brush a baking sheet with olive oil.
- Arrange sweet potatoes on the baking sheet with the scooped-out side up, spray with olive oil, and sprinkle with the Italian Herb Blend.
- Bake until sweet potatoes are cooked through and starting to get a little color on the edges, about 25 minutes.
- While sweet potatoes bake, put the crumbled Feta into a bowl and mash with a fork. Add the Greek yogurt or sour cream and Greek seasoning and mash together with the Feta, then stir in the sliced green onions.
- When the sweet potatoes are done, remove from the oven and place the baking sheet on a trivet or pot holder; then use a small spoon to fill the well in each sweet potato slice with the Feta mixture.
- Put back in the oven and bake until cheese is starting to melt and is heated through, about 5 minutes. Serve hot
- These will keep in the refrigerator (if you’re lucky enough to have any left!) and they’re amazingly good reheated the next day.
- I haven’t tried it yet, but to make ahead for a party I think you could cook sweet potatoes and fill them with the Feta mixture; then refrigerate the filled sweet potatoes and heat them right before you serve them. If you try that, I would let the filled sweet potatoes come to room temperature while the oven heats.

Low-Carb Diet / Low-Glycemic Diet / South Beach Diet Suggestions:
Sweet Potato Appetizers would be a great appetizer or snack for Phase 2 or 3 of the original South Beach Diet or any type of low-glycemic eating plan. Sweet potatoes are a bit lower in carbs than regular white potatoes, but you’d want to use portion control if you’re following a low-carb eating plan.

Grandma Denny’s Homemade Ranch Dip
My Grandma Denny’s Homemade Ranch Dip was a Denny family favorite long before anyone heard of Ranch Dressing! And this family favorite Ranch Dip is a delicious low-carb and keto dip recipe and in my family this makes an appearance at every holiday gathering!
PIN Grandma Denny’s Homemade Ranch Dip to try it later!
My Grandma Denny’s Homemade Ranch Dip is one of my favorite memories from childhood! As early as I can remember, my Grandma Denny made a fantastic dip that she served with carrots and celery as an appetizer at every family gathering. In those days we called Grandma’s homemade ranch dip just *Vegetable Dip* as if there was only one kind of dip that could possibly be served with veggies.
This was long before the introduction of Ranch Dressing to the American culinary scene, and obviously my Grandma Denny was ahead of her time, because now people all over the country are eating Ranch Dip with veggies. And in my own extended family, there would never be a holiday gathering without this delicious homemade Ranch Dip on the table.
Of course there’s nothing wrong with making Ranch-Style Vegetable Dip using a package mix if that time-saver works for you. But my grandma’s Homemade Ranch Dip is a bit fresher tasting as well as being low in carbs, and if you usually use the mix but don’t have a package on hand I bet you’ll love my Grandma’s recipe.
Grandma Denny always used full-fat mayo and sour cream, but for anyone wanting lower fat you can obviously make this with reduced-fat products if you prefer. Or if you don’t like mayo, you might prefer the variation below for Greek Yogurt Ranch Dip, made with Greek yogurt and blended cottage cheese for a higher protein, lower-fat dip.

Can you make this dip with onion powder?
I love the flavor the grated onion gives to my Grandma Denny’s homemade ranch dip. But if you prefer or want to save time, just use 1 tsp. onion powder.
Can you make this homemade ranch dip with Greek Yogurt?
I sometimes make a variation of this that I call Greek Yogurt Ranch Dip that’s lower in fat and higher in protein. For that variation follow this recipe but replace the sour cream with one cup of cottage that’s blended in the food processor until it’s nearly smooth and replace the mayo with one cup fat-free Greek Yogurt. (This is the version I would make when I was strictly following the original South Beach Diet.)
Want a version of ranch dip with more texture?
You can make a variation of this homemade ranch dip recipe with a little chopped red onion, finely diced cucumber, and finely diced red pepper if you’d like a chunkier dip. I would use about 2 T of each.

- My Grandma always used Bon Appetit Seasoning Salt as the secret seasoning in her vegetable dip, but it’s no longer being made (sob!) If you still have Bon Appetit, use it, but now I use Beau Monde Seasoning (affiliate link). If you’re in Europe you can also use Trocomare Seasoning. (affiliate link)
- Grate a small amount of raw onion into a bowl. (I use the large side of a box grater; don’t use a microplane grater which just turns the onion to liquid.)
- Add mayo and sour cream to bowl.
- Then add Beau Monde Seasoning and dried dill weed (affiliate link).
- Mix all ingredients together well with a whisk. You can use a food processor as well, but the whisk is quicker.
- Let the dip chill in the refrigerator for at least an hour or two for best flavor.
- Serve with raw vegetables like celery, sugar snap peas, bell pepper strips, jicama, radishes, broccoli, or cauliflower.
- This is also good with carrots or as a dip for baked sweet potato fries for those who don’t mind more carbs.
- I tested this out on my friend Robin and she gave it two thumbs up!

Ingredients
- 1 cup sour cream (see notes)
- 1 cup mayo (see notes)
- 1 tsp. grated onion
- 2 tsp. dried dill weed
- 2 tsp. Beau Monde Seasoning (see notes)
Instructions
- Grate onion into a bowl, using the large side of a box grater or flat grater (not a microplane grater.)
- Add all other ingredients to the bowl and stir together with a whisk (or you can use a food processor, but it’s not necessary.)
- Chill an hour or so before serving.
Notes
I only use Daisy full-fat sour cream and full-fat mayo for this recipe but if you prefer to make a lower-fat version of the recipe you can definitely use reduced fat sour cream and mayo.
My Grandma always used Bon Appetit Seasoning for this. When that was discontinued I started making it with Beau Monde Seasoning (affiliate link), which is almost identical in flavor.
This will keep in the refrigerator for several weeks. Nutritional information doesn’t include vegetables and is calculated on 1/4 cup serving size.
