CBS has given renewals to two of its big new spinoff shows, Boston Blue and Sheriff Country, confirms Variety. "Two new shows on Friday night have become instant hits with audiences quickly embracing ‘Boston Blue’ and ‘Sheriff Country’ across broadcast and streaming. These early renewals reflect the power of character-driven storytelling, compelling narratives and the exceptional talent on both sides of the camera that make these series truly stand out."

Boston Blue is a spin-off of Blue Bloods and follows former NYPD Detective Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg) as he joins the Boston Police Department and is paired with Detective Lena Silver (Sonequa Martin-Green). The series also includes Maggie Lawson, Marcus Scribner, Gloria Reuben, and Ernie Hudson. Mika Amonsen plays Donnie Wahlberg's character's son, Sean Reagan, stepping into the role previously played by Andrew Terraciano on Blue Bloods.

Sheriff Country is a spin-off of Fire Country, and sees Morena Baccarin reprise her role as Sheriff Mickey Fox. The series sees Fox working in Edgewater County while dealing with her ex-con father, Wes (W. Earl Brown), and her daughter, Skye (Amanda Acuri). The cast also includes Christopher Gorham, Michele Weaver, and Matt Lauria. Kevin Alejandro, Diane Farr, and Max Thieriot have reprised their roles from Fire Country.

Despite the belief that streaming has killed live television, Sheriff Country and Boston Blue are the latest series from CBS that show there is still an appetite for weekly television series on the traditional networks. CBS's slate is filled with wide, appealing series, from sitcoms like Ghosts and George and Mindy's First Marriage to dramas like Tracker and now the Blue Bloods and Fire Country spin-offs. Given that Blue Bloods ran for 14 seasons, and Fire Country is currently in its fourth season, it feels like Sheriff Country and Boston Blue will be running for years to come.
