Stranger Things is nearing its end after nearly a decade, with its epic final season set to conclude later this month. The cast and crew have been very quiet about what we can expect from the series, including which fan-favorite characters may not get their happy ending.
In an interview with ET, Gaten Matarazzo, known for his role as Dustin Henderson, spoke about how fans can prepare for the emotional conclusion to Netflix’s series:
"I understand the anxiety. I hear you. We're all here for all that support for whatever happens. If your favorite is no longer with us or not, who knows? I don't really have any words of comfort. To do the most prep you can: Get some tissues, get some ice cream, get some friends, and some family."
During the Stranger Things season 5, volume 2 trailer, characters Dustin and Steve Harrington (played by Joe Kerry) repeated a phrase they said once before in season 3 that could mean a tragic end for either one – "If you die, I die." Dustin and Steve are certainly fan-favorites, and the characters are scared to see what could happen to them.
In an interview with Jimmy Fallon, Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer suggested a potential brutal ending for Steve as they lined up Funko Pops of the characters and subsequently knocked Steve off the edge of the desk. Fans were quick to suggest that this could hint at Steve’s ultimate ending.

Steve was originally supposed to die in season 1, but the Duffer brothers liked Keery as a person and actor so much that they kept him around, and he became an integral part of what the series is today. Perhaps, since this is the last ever season of Stranger Things, Steve could ultimately die.
Stranger Things will conclude on December 31, with the final episode of the series. Fans were able to see a glimpse of volume 2, which will be released on December 25 and consists of three episodes. With Dustin and Steve’s grave promise, Will’s newfound powers, and Eleven’s reunion with her long-lost sister Kali, only time will tell what fate each character will face.
Volume 1 of Stranger Things season 5 is now available on Netflix. Volume 2 is set to release on December 25, with the series finale coming to Netflix on December 31.
