CBS has decided the fate of two of its biggest 2025 premieres, with Boston Blue and Sheriff Country. Boston Blue is a spinoff of the extremely popular series Blue Bloods, about a New York City police dynasty. Fire Country serves as the flagship series for Sheriff Country, a spinoff led by Morena Baccarin.
After only six episodes of each show have aired so far this fall, CBS is moving ahead with sophomore seasons for both Boston Blue and Sheriff Country, which will air during the 2026-2027 television season.
CBS Entertainment President Amy Reisenbach said in a statement that Boston Blue and Sheriff Country are "instant hits," with viewers embracing "character-driven storytelling" and "compelling narratives."
"Two new shows on Friday night have become instant hits, with audiences quickly embracing BOSTON BLUE and SHERIFF COUNTRY across broadcast and streaming. These early renewals reflect the power of character-driven storytelling, compelling narratives and the exceptional talent on both sides of the camera that make these series truly stand out."
According to CBS's live+7 data, Boston Blue is averaging 8 million viewers. The streaming numbers paint a similarly impressive picture, with the spinoff's streaming ratings up 87% from the numbers Blue Bloods received in fall 2024.
After Blue Bloods ended its 14-season run in fall 2024 for financial reasons, CBS ordered a spinoff that transported Donnie Wahlberg's character Danny Reagan from New York City to The Hub (aka Boston). Alongside Wahlberg, the Boston Blue cast also includes Sonequa Martin-Green, Ernie Hudson, Maggie Lawson, Gloria Reuben, Marcus Scribner and Mika Amonsen.

Meanwhile, Sheriff Country's average live+7 viewership is 7.6 million, with streaming rising 33% from what S.W.A.T. previously averaged.
Sheriff Country is led by Baccarin, who plays Edgewater Sheriff Mickey Fox and the sister of Fire Country character Sharon Leone. Aside from her typical duties as the top cop in town, Mickey also has to deal with personal issues in her family, including with daughter Skye (Amanda Arcuri) and father Wes (W. Earl Brown). Christopher Gorham, Michele Weaver and Matt Lauria also star on Sheriff Country.

Both series air on Friday nights, on either side of Fire Country, which is currently in its fourth season. The combination of Sheriff Country, Fire Country, and Boston Blue across the network's three-hour primetime block has led CBS to win the Friday night ratings war in total viewers.
Boston Blue and Sheriff Country are the latest in a long line of spinoffs, reboots and adaptations that air on CBS.
The network's current lineup also includes a reboot of Matlock with Kathy Bates, The Good Wife and The Good Fight spinoff Elsbeth, the Sherlock Holmes-inspired Watson, NCIS prequel NCIS: Origins and international spinoff NCIS: Sydney, Young Sheldon spinoff Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage, the U.S. adaptation of Ghosts, and Tracker (based on the Jeffery Deaver novel The Never Game).
With their second-season renewals, Boston Blue and Sheriff Country will continue CBS's spinoff trend for at least another year. The strategy is paying off big time for the network, with fans clamoring for more stories set in these universes.
