HEARTBREAKING NEWS – S.W.A.T. Series Finale Update Reveals if Original Characters Will Return

In a recent update, it was revealed that the S.W.A.T. series finale will feel like "business as usual."

The 2017 action-drama S.W.A.T. has been canceled for the third and possibly final time. With the series finale just a few weeks away, TVLine, unfortunately, confirms that former cast members will not be making a return for the series send-off. Fans asked if viewers could expect the return of former characters such as Jim Street (Alex Russell), Christina Alonso (Lina Esco), and Dominique Luca (Kenny Johnson), specifically about the possibility of a Street-Chris wedding. TVLine responded that, per the series finale synopsis, "it will be business as usual for 20-Squad."

The second episode of the two episodes making up the season finale is set to air on May 16th. S.W.A.T. showrunner Andrew Dettmann corroborated this in a statement, saying, "Even if we're no longer airing each week, we want the viewers to feel that Hondo and 20-Squad will go on, that 20-Squad will always be out there taking down the bad guys and protecting the city of L.A."

Based on the 1975 series of the same name, S.W.A.T. follows Sergeant Daniel "Hondo" Harrelson, played by Shemar Moore, and Twenty Squad at the Los Angeles Police Department. The series would air on CBS and was developed by Aaron Rahsaan Thomas and Shawn Ryan. S.W.A.T also featured an ensemble cast including other performers, such as Stephanie Sigman, Peter Onorati, Jay Harrington, David Lim, Patrick St. Esprit, Amy Farrington, Rochelle Enger Ritch, Niko Pepaj, and Annie Ilonzeh.

S.W.A.T.'s Previous Cancelations

The cancelation of S.W.A.T. after its eighth season isn't the first time the franchise has been given the boot. Initially, the show was meant to end in Season 6 but was brought back for the seventh season after heavy backlash over the cancelation. The series renewal for Season 8 would also come as a huge shock to fans who expected Season 7 to be the last.

However, this time, the cancelation might be for good. Series star Shemar Moore, who had pushed for the show's return after its first few cancelations, once again took to Instagram to fight for the show. Moore states in the video, "I don't think you're making the right choice; I'll say that. But, if you are done, I say thank you, genuinely, honestly… If you change your mind, I promise you will make a lot of people smile."
