Inside Mark Harmon’s first project away from NCIS universe as he reprises unforgettable role

Mark Harmon has been busy working on another project that’s entirely unrelated to the world of NCIS.

CBS fans were heartbroken to see Agent Gibbs (played by Harmon) make his exit from NCIS as the staple figure in the iconic police procedural back in 2021.

Nevertheless, it was a bittersweet end as Gibbs was able to leave his troubled past behind and focus on a more peaceful life in Alaska where he could start afresh.

Actor Harmon has still remained in the NCIS universe though while working on the Gibbs prequel NCIS Origins, narrating the new drama as well as appearing in the first episode.

Alongside his work on this latest NCIS spin-off, the 73-year-old has been working on something entirely different, reprising his role in another franchise.

The same year that NCIS debuted in 2003, so did the family comedy Freaky Friday starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan where their mother and daughter characters swapped bodies.

In the first film, Harmon was behind Ryan, the soon-to-be husband of Curtis’ Tess Coleman, much to teenager Anna Coleman’s (Lindsay Lohan) dismay.

Now, Curtis, Lohan and Harmon are all reuniting for the sequel, Freakier Friday, with the NCIS star once again playing Ryan who is now Anna’s step-dad.

This time around, Anna has a daughter of her own as well as a soon-to-be stepdaughter and as they try to navigate their new family dynamic, all three of them, as well as Tess, swap bodies once again.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Harmon opened up on what it was like to be reunited with Curtis.

He shared: “It’s comfortable with Jamie and always has been. I’ve known her since she was 15 or 16.

“Obviously, it’s a different story now, and yet I enjoy time with her.

“When you look at the long form of life, you’re talking about moments with people and sharing them and being with people you liked being with.

“That’s always been true about her for me, so I was pleased to do that.”

NCIS is available to watch on CBS and Freakier Friday will come out in cinemas on Friday, August 8, 2025.
