Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for Landman season 2, episode 7.Hidden in the relationship drama of Landman season 2, episode 7 was a big development in M-Tex's offshore natural gas rig that could change the entire rest of the season. Landman season 2, episode 7 mostly focused on romantic pairings like Cooper and Ariana and Tommy and Angela. Those relationships got most of the screen time, but Landman did get around to developing its offshore natural gas rig storyline a bit more.
Tommy, Cami, and most of the cast of Landman have been dealing with an offshore gas rig all season long. The rig was destroyed in a hurricane, and Monty pocketed the insurance money before he died. Now, M-Tex is on the hook to repair the rig, and no one could figure out how to get the money to do it on such a short timetable. Landman season 2, episode 7, however, completely changed the situation.
The Offshore Gas Rig In Landman Season 2 Had Blown Out Before The Hurricane

After Rebecca spent the night at his trailer, Charlie explained that the offshore natural gas rig only had a 10% chance of actually producing profits once they drill. He then explained that the rig did blow out, but the blowout wasn't due to the hurricane, it coincidentally happened at the same time. That means that there's no guarantee that the offshore gas rig will actually make money, and M-Tex could lose millions trying to repair it.
Charlie didn't know exactly why the offshore gas rig blew out, as there are countless geological factors at play. The well could have dried up, collapsed, or anything else. All he did know is that there's a problem with the supply of gas under the rig, and that repairing the rig would be a huge gamble for M-Tex. Previously, M-Tex's leadership had been assuming the rig would definitely produce profit as soon as it was repaired.
Using that information, Rebecca and Nate theorized that Monty, before he died, had a plan in mind. Monty pocketed the insurance money and didn't start repairing the offshore gas rig because he thought he had a better chance of making money by fighting the insurance fraud lawsuit in court than he did by repairing the rig. There was only a 10% chance that repairing the rig would net any money, so Monty instead used the insurance payout to buy land in the Permean Basin, which had better odds of making a profit.
Rebecca & Nate Are Going To Take The Insurance Claim To Court, But They Have To Convince Cami First

Charlie's revelation in Landman season 2, episode 7 is also going to change M-Tex's entire strategy for the rest of the season. Now, Rebecca and Nate have decided to follow in Monty's footsteps. Instead of getting a loan from Gallino to rebuild the wells, they're going to fight the insurance fraud claims in court. Like Monty, they decided M-Tex has a better chance of coming out on top in court than they do by rebuilding the rig.
Rebecca and Nate also outlined some of their legal plan. Rebecca noted several problems with the insurance company's position, such as the fact that they paid the money directly to Monty. She also laid out a plan to pitch the case to a jury of roughnecks and blue-collar workers. Meanwhile, Nate said that he plans to drag the case out long enough for M-Tex to muster up the funds for a settlement or to repair the rig without a loan.

Before Nate and Rebecca can go through with their litigation, however, they have to convince Cami. That may be easier said than done. Currently, Cami is all-in on working with Gallino. She trusts him, she doesn't care about his cartel ties, and she may not agree with Rebecca and Nate. Additionally, Gallino may convince Cami not to litigate because he wants her to take the loan so he can get into the oil industry and continue to manipulate her.
Landman season 2, episode 7 has essentially set up a big conflict within M-Tex. Rebecca and Nate's plan is a good one, but Cami may end up being a villain in the end. If she sides with Gallino, he gets exactly what he wants, and M-Tex essentially gets into bed with the cartel. Tommy will likely be on Rebecca and Nate's side, which means there could be a fight for control of M-Tex before Landman season 2 is over.
