NCIS spinoff renewed as fans still angry over ‘blindside’ cancellation one year later

Season 2 of the NCIS spinoff series NCIS: Sydney came to an end on April 25, just one year after NCIS: Hawai'i was abruptly cancelled by the network, leaving fans feeling 'blindsided.'

The military police procedural follows Special Agents Michelle Mackey, played by Olivia Swann, and DeShawn Jackson, played by Sean Sagar, as they combine forces with members of the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and work together to investigate Naval crimes while navigating their personal relationships.

The series is one of six in the NCIS, or Naval Criminal Investigative Service, franchise alongside Los Angeles, New Orleans, Hawai'i, and Origins. NCIS: Sydney premiered in November 2023 and is the first and only series to be set outside of the US. The NCIS prequel series Origins premiered in 2024 and was also renewed in February 2025.

NCIS: Sydney also stars Todd Lasance as Sergeant Jim "JD" Dempsey, Tuuli Narkle as Constable Evie Cooper, Mavournee Hazel as Bluebird "Blue" Gleeson, and William McInnes as Roy "Rosie" Penrose. The complete cast for Season 3 has not been confirmed.

Executive Producer and showrunner Morgan O'Neill recently told TV Insider: "Season 2 ends with the reveal of who has been pulling the strings all along and it’s pretty shocking and it’s pretty personal, and it kind of threatens to tear the fabric of the team apart at its core. How that sets up for Season 3, God, who knows."

"With two seasons under our belt, we are looking forward to upping the ante and bringing even more fun-filled, high-octane action from our incredible NCIS: Sydney team," Morgan continued.

The show's renewal comes at the heels of the cancellation of NCIS: Los Angeles, which ran for 14 seasons, in 2023 and NCIS: Hawai'i which was cancelled exactly one year ago.

NCIS: Hawai'i is the shortest-lived spinoff series, and its cancellation left fans reeling, even threatening to boycott the network until it is renewed. The series received praise for its positive LGBTQ representation, diverse cast, and being the first female-led NCIS spin-off.

One fan wrote: "With all due respect @CBS, even after almost two seasons, @NCIS Sydney nowhere near as good asm@NCISHawaiiCBS. You can still can Sydney and bring back Hawaii. From what I've seen on the Internet, millions of people would be happy."

Another echoed: "You MUST bring back NCIS HAWAII. SYDNEY is horrible in comparison."
