#OneChicago’s First Three-Show Crossover Event in Five Years Returns for an Encore Broadcast

Thanks to the strict COVID-19 protocols that were put in place for production during the lockdown and then the writers and actors strikes last year, #OneChicago hasn’t been able to produce a three-way crossover since 2019.

But now, with a normal full season finally on the slate, NBC brought Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D. and Chicago Med together in a one-night crossover event, which will rerun tonight.

“Putting together what is essentially a three-hour action movie is an incredibly ambitious task requiring complete coordination across our writers, casts, crews and producers, along with help from the city of Chicago,” said Anastasia Puglisi, Wolf Entertainment Executive Vice President and co-executive producer of the #OneChicago series. “We’re thrilled to have the best talent in every department to meet this challenge, reinforce the #OneChicago brand, and provide our fans with a unique and compelling viewing experience.”

Here is everything we know:

When will the #OneChicago crossover event be released?

The one-night Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D. and Chicago Med crossover event premiered on Wednesday, Jan, 29, and is rebroadcasting on March 12, 2025.

What time will the #OneChicago crossover event take place?

The one-night Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D. and Chicago Med crossover event will begin airing at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

What is the story for the #OneChicago crossover event?

Here is the tune-in information: “When a gas explosion rocks a high-rise, Chicago’s first responders come out in force to rescue hundreds of civilians. It’s the calamity beneath the surface, however, that sends our heroes on a race to save 40 people trapped deep underground, including two of their own.”

"It was a big undertaking but it’s always fun when you get to do these big things," Chicago P.D. showrunner Gwen Sigan told Parade. "We built a lot of it, so that alone was neat. And there’s some huge incidents that you’ll see in the three hours, and just production value’s very high. Hopefully, the fans will love it. It’s definitely a huge ride, action movie, but it’s also got these really interesting emotional stories with pairings from characters from all three shows that you wouldn’t really expect and that don’t get a lot of screen time together usually. So, I think it’ll be fun, it’ll be a good one."

"It’s the Chicago equivalent of Avengers: Endgame," Weber tells Parade about the crossover. "It’s not just a casual, 'Oh, there’s a doctor who’s intermingling with a fire person, and there’s a cop and they’re talking to a fire person. No, this is your favorite characters on this huge ride, the audience is going to be out of their minds with excitement.

"It was an amazing time for me, great fun. And good fun to see old friends and make new ones, but the audience, it’s like going to a #OneChicago amusement park. It’s going to be amazing, and the show threw everything they had into this, all three shows. People are going to be out of their minds, and it actually feels like the old epic event shows that you and I remember from the '70s and '80s, where everybody would gather and talk about it the next day. This is that."

What was the storyline for the 2019 #OneChicago crossover story?

“Infection, Part I”: In the first part of the crossover event, a rare but deadly bacteria took its toll on victims around the city; Firehouse 51 worked together alongside the CDC to resolve the dangerous situation.

“Infection, Part II”: An apartment complex was forced into quarantine when a deadly virus turned into an epidemic. P.D. chased a lead that could point to bioterrorism, and Will (Nick Gehlfuss) got dangerously close to the suspect.

“Infection: Part III”: After zeroing in on a bioterrorism suspect, the P.D. prepared to undertake their biggest manhunt yet. Upton (Tracy Spirkiadois) was torn between tracking down the perp and providing emotional support to a young girl.

"There’s real terror about what’s going on,” Fire showrunner Derek Haas, who came up with the idea for the three-hour event with executive producer Dick Wolf, told TVLine. “[When] you’re trained to fight fires, you know what you’re dealing with for the most part. You have the right equipment on to deal with temperatures and those things. What you’re not thinking about is microbes. It’s the War of the Worlds kind of scenario — germs, bacteria. So that’s terrifying, and especially seeing how fast it can affect people. This is a biological agent that, within 24 hours, can take someone out. So that’s horrifying.”
