Percy Jackson Season 3’s Release Gap Could Be Shorter, Says Author

Percy Jackson author Rick Riordan has shared some insight into the production gap between seasons 2 and 3. Disney+ has already renewed its YA fantasy adaptation months before the release of Percy Jackson season 2, leading to questions about the filming and release timeline for the follow-up.

In an interview with ScreenRant's Liam Crowley for the franchise's 20th anniversary, Percy Jackson & the Olympians author Rick Riordan shared some insight into the television adaptation's production. He shared that "It is the hope that we can get season 3 out more quickly than we did between 1 and 2."

Riordan explained that Disney+ and 20th Century Studios have committed to pressing forward with the project already, and that everyone understands that moving along more quickly is ideal, as long as it's not at the detriment of the quality. This is the goal for both the author and the production team, but only time will tell whether it can happen.

Rick Riordan has been around the block long enough to know that anything can happen in Hollywood, and nothing is certain. That said, it means something that he would put this comment out there, revealing that they're trying to jump into season 3 at a quicker rate.

The typical turnaround time for blockbuster TV shows like Percy Jackson or other high-budget fantasy titles is around two years, a divisive trend in 2020s television. This matters more than ever, though, when the show is centered around a cast of child actors who are intended to look a certain age.

Watching the actors grow alongside their characters is part of the joy of a show like this, but what the studio and audiences evidently don't want is for Percy Jackson to have a beard and graying hair by season 3, when he's supposed to be twelve. It's good to know that Riordan and the team at Disney are aware of the urgency here.

Season 1 aired in December 2023 and was renewed just eight days after it ended in February 2024. Production then didn't begin until August 2024, hence the December 2025 release date for season 2. The early renewal means the show can hopefully begin months earlier, potentially aiming for an early 2027 season 3.

Disney+ has the opportunity to set an example for the rest of Hollywood by offering audiences a 12-month turnaround for a show of this scale. With audiences frustrated about delays for titles like House of the Dragon, Disney's Percy Jackson & the Olympians could excel by offering the quickness that other streamers aren't.
