S.W.A.T. Season 8 Delivers Hicks’ Return But Undermines His Character’s Legacy

S.W.A.T. Season 8 has been a rollercoaster for Commander David Hicks, whose leadership role has been precariously balanced throughout the season. As the series nears its conclusion, the resolution of Hicks’ storyline in Episode 19 offers a mixed bag: while his reinstatement as Commander feels satisfying on the surface, the manner in which the show handles this arc ultimately does a disservice to one of its most iconic and beloved characters.

From the outset, Hicks’ job security was put to the test, creating tension that could have blossomed into a compelling narrative exploring loyalty, leadership, and personal integrity. Unfortunately, the execution fell short, particularly in the closing episodes, where Hicks’ motivations and actions seemed inconsistent with the character fans have followed since the beginning.

Hicks’ Return: A Triumphant Yet Troubling Moment

Episode 19 of Season 8 centers around a high-stakes prison escape that puts the entire team on edge. Hicks steps up decisively, working alongside Hondo and the squad to track down the escapees and uncover the fraud scheme orchestrated by Deputy Chief Bennett’s husband. Demonstrating professionalism and grace, Hicks even offers Bennett the chance to rectify her mistakes by bringing in her husband, showing no bitterness over his earlier forced resignation.

However, when Bennett fails to act within the critical hour, Hicks personally intervenes, diffusing a volatile hostage situation involving Bennett and her husband. His calm and calculated approach not only saves lives but also reinforces his unwavering commitment to justice and duty. Witnessing Hicks’ integrity firsthand, Bennett acknowledges her errors, announces her resignation, and offers to tear up Hicks’ resignation letter—inviting him back as Commander.

This moment should have been a powerful culmination of Hicks’ struggle, showcasing his resilience and dedication. Instead, the storyline stumbles by undercutting the emotional weight of his journey.

The Cost of a Weak Character Arc

A key turning point occurs in a private exchange between Hicks and Hondo before Bennett’s confession. Hondo urges Hicks to fight to retain his command, praising the strength he’s demonstrated throughout the ordeal. But rather than embrace this fight, Hicks surprisingly expresses exhaustion with “tit-for-tat” political battles and seemingly resigns himself to the outcome.

This sudden change of heart feels jarringly out of character. Earlier episodes clearly illustrated Hicks’ determination and unwillingness to back down, even when facing powerful opposition. His reluctance to stand firm in the final episodes dilutes the credibility of his character development and robs viewers of a satisfying climax to his arc.

Furthermore, accepting Bennett’s offer without resistance sends mixed signals. On one hand, it shows Hicks’ pragmatic acceptance of the situation, but on the other, it undermines the fierce loyalty and grit that defined him throughout the series. The conversation between Hicks and Hondo, meant to highlight emotional growth, instead cheapens the entire narrative arc by making it feel rushed and unearned.

How S.W.A.T. Could Have Delivered a Stronger Conclusion

The premise of Hicks’ job being on the line held great potential, especially with the initial hope that S.W.A.T. would continue into a ninth season. Deputy Chief Bennett’s push for leadership reform and fresh faces could have introduced meaningful conflict and layered storytelling. Yet with the series’ cancellation, the writers were left to hastily wrap up loose ends.

Had this storyline been introduced earlier in the season, it might have allowed the show to delve deeper into the struggles Hicks faced outside his role. For example, a midseason forced resignation could have explored Hicks grappling with retirement, adjusting to life beyond the badge, and resisting changes to his beloved unit. This would provide context for his later reluctance to fight back, making his resignation more emotionally resonant.

Meanwhile, the ongoing clash between Hicks, Hondo, and Bennett could have sustained tension, with Hondo battling to preserve the team’s legacy and Hicks eventually being pulled back into leadership under dramatic circumstances—such as saving Bennett’s life or exposing a bigger conspiracy. This approach would have maintained narrative stakes and honored the character’s longstanding dedication.

Instead, the swift resolution in the final episodes leaves little room for growth or reflection. Hicks regains his position in a single episode, and his decision to avoid political games feels rushed, diminishing the emotional impact of what should have been a defining finale.

Final Thoughts

S.W.A.T. Season 8 attempts to give Commander Hicks a fitting send-off by restoring him to his rightful place. However, the rushed pacing and questionable character choices ultimately undermine his legacy. Rather than a nuanced farewell, the storyline feels like an afterthought, glossing over the complexity and strength that have made Hicks an essential part of the show.

For fans, Hicks remains a symbol of unwavering leadership and moral clarity. While his return to command is welcome, the journey there leaves much to be desired—proving that even the strongest characters deserve endings crafted with care and respect.
