With CBS cancelling not one but four shows, it’s understandable why fans may be concerned by NCIS and NCIS: Origins not airing during their usual time slot. But rest assured NCISverse fans, there’s a reason for the sudden break and it’s not indicative of the shows’ futures.
Why are NCIS and NCIS: Origins not on tonight?
NCIS and NCIS: Origins took a break from their usual Monday time slot on March 10, 2025, due to CBS’ special concert, Ringo & Friends at the Ryman, which aired from 8 to 10 p.m. during the time slot NCIS, The Neighborhood, and Poppa’s House usually runs from. The special featured performances from The Beatles member, Ringo Starr, as well as country musicians like Sheryl Crow, Mickey Guyton, Emmylou Harris, and Jamey Johnson. The concert was filmed at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee.

While NCIS was off the air, NCIS: Origins aired a rerun during its usual time slot of 10 p.m. likely to keep it on the same schedule as NCIS. NCIS last aired a new episode on March 3, 2025, while NCIS: Origins‘ last episode was on February 10, 2025. CBS hasn’t confirmed the reason NCIS: Origins has taken more breaks than NCIS, however, given that it’s a new show, NCIS: Origins — a prequel that follows Leroy Jethro Gibbs as a young, up-and-coming special agent — likely wasn’t greenlit for as many episodes as NCIS, which is now in its 22nd season.

NCIS and NCIS: Origins‘ breaks from TV come after CBS canceled three primetime procedural dramas: S.W.A.T., which is set to end after its eighth season; FBI: International, which is set to end after its fourth season; and FBI: Most Wanted, which is set to end after its sixth season. CBS also renewed The Neighborhood for its eighth and final season, which is set to air during the 2025-2026 broadcast season.
S.W.A.T., which was canceled and uncanceled by CBS twice before, was among the most shocking cancellations. Shemar Mooer — who played Malcolm Winters on The Young and the Restless and also leads S.W.A.T. as Sergeant II Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson Jr. — called on CBS to save S.W.A.T. again after news of its third cancellation.
“To all our LOYAL SWAT FANS out there making NOISE!!!! Thank you for your LOVE and SUPPORT!!!! You’ve kept us going for 8 seasons strong, we came back from the dead TWICE!!!! Three times would make history!!! Thank you for riding with us!!!!” he captioned an Instagram post at the time.
CBS announced in February 2025 that NCIS, NCIS: Origins and NCIS: Sydney had all been renewed for new seasons. NCIS will enter its 23rd season; NCIS: Origins will be in its second; and NCIS: Sydney will be in its third. Another NCIS spinoff, NCIS: Tony & Ziva, following former characters Anthony DiNozzo and Ziva David, is also in the works at Paramount Plus.
