The end of an era will finally arrive later this week when S.W.A.T. bows out following a largely successful eight-season run. Despite the hopes of fans and cast members that the series might receive a last-minute decision to pull it back from the edge of extinction, the end is nigh for Hondo (Shemar Moore) and the rest of his tactical team. As we march towards the series finale, executive producer, Andrew Dettmann, has filled in followers on what to expect from what will certainly be an explosive farewell.
Teasing the episode that will serve as a sendoff for the characters we’ve come to know and love over the last almost decade, Dettmann told TV Insider,
“Heading into the finale, Hondo is going to be challenged to keep the team together. He has always referred to and thought of 20-Squad as a family, but now that notion will be tested like never before… We reach new ground with almost all of the characters. Deacon (Jay Harrington) realizes what really matters to him at SWAT. Tan (David Lim) considers a new career path within the LAPD. Powell (Anna Enger Ritch) and Alfaro (Niko Pepaj) cement their bonds of friendship. And Gamble (Annie Ilonzeh) makes a life-altering decision about her role with the team.”
Setting up the final mission that the team will embark on together, Dettman said that the Russian mercenaries who will appear as the antagonists in S.W.A.T.’s finale, will be “the most formidable and well-trained opponents they’ve ever faced.” With numerous explosives hidden across the city, it will take loads of teamwork to ensure the entire squad’s safety with Hondo at the helm.
The Finale Pays Homage To the Bonds That Hold ‘S.W.A.T.’ Together
From week to week, audiences have tuned in over the last eight seasons to see the highly-trained team take on every possible threat and danger thrown their way. And, according to Dettmann, the finale will be no different, as it will parallel bonds that have helped the show become the success that it was for so long.
“It’s a reflection of how our cast and crew have become so incredibly close over the course of the show, and those relationships and affections feel only stronger knowing that we’re near our end. By shining a light on the respect and commitment each of the characters have for each other, we’re giving a nod to our larger family and the bonds we’ve made.”
S.W.A.T.’s series finale arrives on CBS this Friday, May 16.
