Earlier, the episode titled “Nightingale” featured Colter Shaw involved in a missing case about singer Angie, who was abducted. To obtain some crucial information, he heads to Bobby’s cousin. At the time, Randy informs him about Bobby’s whereabouts, he said, “Bobby is dealing with some family stuff, but he wanted to make sure he didn’t leave you hanging” (via TheDirect). However, the episode didn’t provide any detail about his personal matter.

Season 2 Episode 15, titled “The Grey Goose,” focuses on Colter asking Randy whether he has any information on Bobby returning. He said, “You know how he gets. He doesn’t like to talk about personal stuff.” However, the series eventually disclosed the reason behind his extended absence. (via Soaps.com)

Colter later reveals that he heard Bobby was attending a close friend’s funeral. To this, Randy agrees and mentions that he is grieving the loss. He said, “I know that is hitting him hard. They were like brothers.”  Colter then reveals that he has sent some messages to Bobby, but he realized that he didn’t pick up as he was dealing with the loss of a friend.

After a seemingly long break, Bobby returns in Episode 16, “The Mercy Seat,” teaming up with Randy to help Colter Shaw out of a perilous zone in snowy Montana. He was also shown getting frustrated with Randy for not taking care of his office during his absence.
