Wicked: For Good is hitting a few more box office milestones as it wraps up its theatrical run, now passing the most successful movie from iconic director Tim Burton. Wicked: For Good's box office swiftly collapsed after its opening weekend, and its current worldwide gross of $507 million is far behind 2024's Wicked's $758 million, but it has also been a commercial hit overall.
The critical reception to Wicked: For Good was also not as spectacular as its predecessor's, but reviewers generally praised Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande's lead performances as Elphaba and Glinda, bringing the story of their friendship, overlapping with The Wizard of Oz, to an emotional end. Particularly with domestic box office charts, Wicked: For Good has been able to overtake some major fantasy titles.
As of today, per The Numbers, Wicked: For Good has surpassed Tim Burton's live-action Alice in Wonderland (2010) among the top 10 highest-grossing fantasy movies of all time at the domestic box office. Wicked: For Good has reportedly grossed $334.463 million at the domestic box office, barely above Alice in Wonderland's $334.191 million.
Alice in Wonderland remains Burton's highest-grossing movie, having earned $1.025 billion at the worldwide box office. Wicked: For Good also recently passed The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring in the domestic charts, and could potentially just overtake The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers before it leaves theaters (if it can gross slightly more than $345.1 million).
However, Wicked: For Good's theatrical run will be coming to an end very soon, as it has just been released digitally, accompanied by a collection of bonus features. As it stands, Wicked: For Good is the eighth highest-grossing fantasy movie of all time domestically (2024's Wicked is at No. 2). Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, two Lord of the Rings movies, and several Disney live-action remakes also make up the top 7.
Wicked: For Good also just earned five 2026 Golden Globes nominations, including two acting nods for Erivo and Grande, two Best Original Song submissions, and Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, but notably, not one for Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy. It remains to be seen how it will fare at the Oscars, but it will probably fall short of last year's haul.
Wicked: For Good is bringing a worldwide phenomenon to a close and has proven to be a successful movie in its own right. It's only really a disappointment when compared to Wicked, which had the stronger source material of the Broadway show's first act to stand on. Its sequel could maybe hit some smaller milestones before it closes, but its availability at home seems like the end of the road.
