The halls of Westside Hospital are about to look a lot different, and fans are already taking to social media to process the emotional whirlwind.

Following the high-stakes, two-part Season finale of Fox’s hit medical drama Doc, executive producer Hank Steinberg has revealed a series of major casting shifts that will redefine the show heading into Season . From heartbreaking exits to a charismatic new lead, the “empty nest” era of the show has officially arrived.

One of the biggest talking points among the “Doc-fandom” is the departure of Charlotte Fountain-Jardim, who plays Katie. After a pivotal season where Katie helped her mother, Amy (Molly Parker), navigate recovery and memory loss, the character is officially heading off to Northwestern University.

While Fountain-Jardim was a series regular in Season , she will transition to a guest star role for the upcoming -episode third season. Steinberg explains that the move is a natural progression for the story.

“Katie’s off to college, and that’s a different chapter for Amy and Michael, which is appropriate and a good shift,” Steinberg tells Deadline, noting that a “slight time jump” is likely on the horizon. “Empty nest is a whole other psychological, emotional challenge for people, especially for Amy, who doesn’t remember all that time.”

But the departure of a daughter isn’t the only loss fans are mourning. The finale also saw the permanent exit of Felicity Huffman’s character, Dr. Joan Ridley.

Huffman joined the show on a one-year series regular deal to play Amy’s mentor, and her arc ended in a “heroic fashion” as Joan passed away in hospice care. Social media was flooded with tributes to Huffman’s “fantastic” performance, with fans calling the character’s final moments some of the most “cathartic” in the series’ history.

As one door closes, another opens—and it’s a big one. Enter: Blair Underwood.

The legendary actor is officially joining the cast for Season as Dr. Ben Grant, a trauma and cardiothoracic surgeon. Not only does his character bring much-needed surgical expertise to the screen, but he also shares a mysterious romantic history with Amy that is sure to keep viewers guessing.

“Blair’s incredible; he’s so charismatic, and he was organic, new energy,” Steinberg says of the casting.

While the new blood is exciting, fans are still asking: what about Scott Wolf? After his “villainous” Dr. Richard Miller redeemed himself by nearly dying to save others from a deadly virus, the actor’s future remains a question mark.

Though Richard told Amy he’s “moving on” from Westside, Steinberg isn’t ready to say goodbye forever. “We love Scott, we love the character, we will see if there’s a way to bring him back in a way that makes sense,” he teased.

The finale wasn’t without its casualties, however. In a shocking twist that left X (formerly Twitter) reeling, Nurse Lucy (Paulyne Wei) became the first staffer to die on screen after succumbing to the virus.

As the show gears up for its -episode Season order, it’s clear that change is the only constant at Westside. Whether it’s new romances or familiar faces returning, Doc continues to prove it knows exactly how to pull at our heartstrings.
