By Thomas Moore 04/29/2026

Animation fans, assemble! The Annecy International Animation Film Festival has just dropped its official lineup, and social media is already in a state of pure meltdown. While the festival is known as the “Cannes of Animation,” this year’s slate feels more like a Hollywood blockbuster event thanks to some massive names and the return of a TV icon.

The biggest buzz on X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram is centered around one man: Mike Judge. The creative genius behind ‘Beavis and Butt-Head’ and ‘King of the Hill’ is set to receive the Honorary Cristal Award, celebrating a career that has literally shaped adult animation for over years.

Hank Hill Is Back In The Building

If the award wasn’t enough to get fans talking, the festival confirmed that Judge will be presenting a special preview of the upcoming th season of ‘King of the Hill’. He will be joined by co-creator Greg Daniels and showrunner Saladin K. Patterson for a masterclass that has fans of the Hill family counting down the days.

“Mike Judge has been a target for me for a long time,” confessed artistic director Marcel Jean. He noted that in today’s political climate, Judge’s voice as a “strong advocate for free speech and free thinking” is more relevant than ever. After a near-miss in due to the pandemic, the “Idiocracy” director is finally getting his flowers in France.

A Star-Studded Masterclass Series

Judge isn’t the only heavy hitter heading to the lakeside festival. Ricky Gervais is set to host a masterclass on his highly anticipated Netflix adult animation, ‘Alley Cats’. The announcement has sparked plenty of curiosity online, with fans eager to see how Gervais’s signature wit translates to the animated world.

For the stop-motion lovers, the festival is pulling out all the stops. Travis Knight, the visionary behind ‘Kubo and the Two Strings’, will attend for the first time to show off footage from his new feature, ‘Wildwood’. Plus, ‘The Incredibles’ director Brad Bird will be on hand to discuss his long-gestating project, ‘Ray Gunn’.

Global Competition and “Sharksploitation” Vibes?

While the stars are grabbing the headlines, the competition lineup is proving that animation is far from being in a “crisis.” With films in the official feature competition, the selection represents different countries.

“We heard about a crisis in European animation production, but when you look at the quality of these films… this doesn’t look like an industry in crisis,” Marcel Jean noted.

Headline titles include:

Viva Carmen!: A vibrant animated take on the classic opera.

A Nod To The Legends

In a move that has cinephiles cheering, Annecy will also honor the Brothers Quay. These stop-motion auteurs have influenced everyone from Christopher Nolan to Peter Greenaway.

“The day Annecy stops celebrating this type of artist, we will have lost touch with our origins,” said Jean. The festival will also celebrate years of Aardman Animations, the legendary studio that gave us ‘Wallace & Gromit’.

The Future Of The Frame

It wouldn’t be a festival without a conversation about technology. The Mifa animation market will host closed-door workshops on artificial intelligence. Head of Mifa Véronique Encrenaz explained that the goal is to gather professionals to discuss the “fears and questions” surrounding AI in a constructive way.

Whether you are there for the high-brow stop-motion or just to hear Hank Hill say “I tell you what” one more time, Annecy is shaping up to be a viral sensation. The festival officially kicks off this June, and you can bet we will be watching every frame!
