By Brian Jackson 04/18/2026

The little yellow troublemakers are back, and they are bringing some serious musical muscle with them! Fans of the world’s biggest animated franchise are already taking to social media to celebrate the news that two-time Academy Award nominee John Powell has officially signed on to score Illumination’s upcoming flick, ‘Minions & Monsters’.

If the name sounds familiar, it is because Powell has been the mastermind behind some of your favorite cinematic soundscapes. From the soaring melodies of ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ to the magic of the ‘Wicked’ movie, Powell is known for delivering scores that pull at the heartstrings while keeping the energy high.

His return to the Illumination fold is being hailed by fans as a “perfect match.” The composer previously worked his magic on ‘s ‘Migration’ and the cult favorite ‘The Lorax’, and the internet is already speculating about what kind of “banana-fueled” symphony he has in store for us this time.

A Love Letter to Classic Hollywood

‘Minions & Monsters’ is not just another spin-off. The film is being billed as a “rambunctious, ridiculous and totally true story” of how our favorite yellow henchmen conquered Hollywood, became massive movie stars, and—in true Minion fashion—managed to lose it all.

The plot thickens as they accidentally unleash monsters onto the world and have to band together to save the planet from the very mayhem they created. Insiders describe the project as a love letter to the Golden Age of Hollywood, which means Powell will be able to flex his musical muscles across a variety of classic styles.

“A Minions movie that’s a love letter to old Hollywood with a John Powell score? Take my money now!” one fan gushed on X. Another noted on TikTok, “Powell’s animation scores are elite. This is going to be a masterpiece.”

A Star-Studded Cast Joins the Mayhem

It is not just the music that has people talking. The voice cast for ‘Minions & Monsters’ reads like a who-is-who of Hollywood royalty. Fans were quick to spot some heavy hitters on the roster, including Oscar winners Allison Janney and Christoph Waltz.

The lineup also features the legendary Jeff Bridges, Jesse Eisenberg, Zoey Deutch, and ‘South Park’ creator Trey Parker. Funnyman Bobby Moynihan and voice acting veteran Phil LaMarr are also set to lend their pipes to the project.

Of course, it would not be a Minions movie without the man who started it all. Academy Award nominee Pierre Coffin is returning to the director’s chair and will once again provide the iconic voices for the Minions themselves—a role he has voiced since they first captured our hearts in .

The King of Animation Scores

John Powell’s resume is nothing short of legendary. Having been mentored by the great Hans Zimmer, Powell has worked on everything from the high-octane ‘Bourne Identity’ to the galaxy far, far away in ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’.

However, it is his work in animation where he truly reigns supreme. With animated features under his belt, including ‘Kung Fu Panda’ and the ‘Ice Age’ series, he has written more music for animation than any other modern composer.

With ‘Minions & Monsters’ set to hit theaters on July , Powell is definitely on a tight schedule to deliver the magic. But if his past work is any indication, the “Minion-mains” of the world are in very good hands.

Stay tuned for more updates as we get closer to the summer’s biggest—and yellowest—premiere!
