The “Mystery Box” is officially open! J.J. Abrams is making his highly anticipated return to the director’s chair, and he’s bringing two of Hollywood’s brightest stars along for the ride.
During the Warner Bros. presentation at CinemaCon in Las Vegas on Tuesday, the visionary director gave fans a tantalizing first glimpse at his secret new sci-fi/fantasy project, The Great Beyond. This marks Abrams’ first time directing a feature film since ’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and the internet is already losing its mind over the pairing of leading man Glen Powell and Gen Z icon Jenna Ortega.
“I love franchises, but felt like I needed to get back to telling original stories,” Abrams told the enthusiastic crowd. It’s a sentiment that clearly resonates with fans on X (formerly Twitter) and TikTok, who have been clamoring for a fresh, non-franchise epic from the mind behind Super and Lost.
The teaser footage, while brief, set a haunting and mysterious tone that had the room in a hush. It opened with someone typing a quote from H.G. Wells on a vintage, early-generation computer: “There is, though I do not know how there is, or how it may be, another world out of sight and sound.”
A voiceover then teased a mind-bending journey for the lead couple, played by Powell and Ortega, suggesting they are searching for “something more.” The voice whispered, “The world you think you know the limits of, you can’t even begin to fathom.”
Social media users were quick to react to the footage, with many praising the “immaculate vibes” and the “powerhouse duo” of Powell—who is currently having a massive career moment—and Ortega, whose “scream queen” energy seems perfect for a sci-fi mystery.
Abrams isn’t just directing; he wrote the script himself and is producing alongside Tommy Gormley under his Bad Robot banner. The film also boasts an incredible supporting cast including Emma Mackey, Sophie Okonedo, Merritt Wever, and the legendary Samuel L. Jackson.
While the plot remains tightly under wraps (classic J.J.!), the teaser confirmed that the film is slated to hit theaters on November .
The reveal comes at a transitional time for Abrams’ production company, Bad Robot, which recently announced it would be scaling back its physical footprint by closing its Los Angeles office to focus on a smaller in-house team in New York. However, the company remains a heavy hitter at Warner Bros., with a massive slate that includes the upcoming sci-fi thriller The End of Oak Street starring Anne Hathaway.
As the countdown to November begins, one thing is certain: we are all ready to see what lies within The Great Beyond. Given the talent involved and Abrams’ track record for keeping us on the edge of our seats, this is bound to be the must-watch event of the fall.
